Aujourd'hui, je suis allée à Zara pour la première fois depuis longtemps. Il était vers 18h. Alors que je passais devant l'entrée, le gardien m'a dit «nihao». Je lui ai répondu: «Je ne suis pas chinoise». Est-ce normal?
Pour ceux qui ne comprennent pas pourquoi c'est un problème, j'aimerais expliquer un peu.
Premièrement, toutes les personnes d'aspect asiatique ne sont pas chinoises. Deuxièmement, je vis en France et je parle français. Pensez-vous que le gardien saluerait en «chinois» aux clients français? Ils vous saluent en français lorsque vous entrez dans un magasin.
Malheureusement, ce truc «nihao» arrive souvent. J'ai appris le chinois au lycée et je connais quelques phrases. Quand je leur réponds en chinois, ils ne comprennent pas ce que je dis.
C'était vraiment décevant d'entendre une remarque aussi ignorante sur l'une des marques de vêtements les plus reconnaissables au monde.
Well, today I went to Zara for the first time in a while. It was around 18h. As I was passing the entrance, the guardian said to me 'nihao'. I said right back to him 'I'm not Chinese'. Is this common?
For those who don't understand why this is a problem, I'd like to explain a bit. First, all Asian looking people are not Chinese. Second, I live in France and I speak French. Do you think the guardian would greet in 'Chinese' to French customers? They greet in French when you enter a shop.
Sadly, this 'nihao' thing happens a lot. I learned Chinese in high school and know a few phrases. When I respond to them in Chinese, they don't understand what I'm saying.
It was really disappointing to hear such an ignorant remark at one of the most recognisable clothing brands in the world....
